Resources for Professional Referrals
Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to spend some time with me on my web site. I think I have a flavor for the kind of information you need in order for you to make a referral to a mental health professional like myself. I will try to provide that here.
I have had many and varied experiences throughout my life, and there has been nothing more rewarding than working for the improvement of children and families professionally. I have been trained in, and use a number of effective therapeutic models. My MA in psychology carried an emphasis in marriage, family and child therapy. Over the years I have effectively used strength based Solution Focused Therapy, which evolved from Jay Haley's Strategic, and Brief Therapy. This approach to therapy enhances the individual and families ability to utilize creative, individualized solutions to existing problems.
When it comes to developing creative interventions I frequently use an Experiential approach (Virginia Satire and Carl Whitaker). These interventions always attempt to instill positive self regard and promote individual growth. Like Solution Focused Therapy, Experiential Therapy focuses on effective communication with an emphasis on the present.
I follow standard comprehensive assessment protocols and tools for treatment and diagnosis (insurance companies also require it). For example when looking at what appears to be depression (often mis-diagnosed in children), I have to look at things other than obvious issues or situations that can cause depression or related problems. Many times, if not most often, the stated problem is often just a symptom of a deeper, more complex issue. Other things such as eating & sleeping habits, drugs, alcohol, possible medical problems like diabetes, thyroid problems, and menopause need to be referred to an appropriate doctor or other professional.
I refer clients who have serious issues I am not trained in, or qualified to treat (i.e., eating disorders, psych testing, and sexual offenders). I am credentialed with a number of insurance providers and I receive referrals from various professionals in the community.
Over the years I have worked with clients of varied ages and cultures. I spent eight of the last ten years working with children and adults with mild to severe mental illness, and their families.
I hope this provides you with the important information you need to make a comfortable referral. If you have additional questions and/or comments, please email or call me. And please visit some of the other links within this site that may be of value to you or your client. I look forward to being of service.
Sincerely,
